McConnell The Columbus Blue Jackets in partnership with the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation, have established the John H. McConnell Scholarship Fund in honor of the team’s founder.
OFF-SEASON INTERN

Position: Foundation/Community Development Intern

Time: May - August/September
Department: Public Relations
Supervisor: Director of Community Development

Job Description: This position will report to directly to the manager of community development/Foundation. The intern will be expected to assist on key projects as assigned and take responsibility of daily activities as outlined by members of the community development and fan development staff. In addition, the intern will be expected to attend any Columbus Blue Jackets after-hours programs and any weekend special events. This internship will give the student a great first-hand experience (and portfolio materials) from the world of sports.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Blue Jackets at School Program/Book Jackets Program - Intern will be responsible for assisting in the marketing of the at school program, organization of player and mascot appearances associated with the program, kickoff and fulfillment of reward packages at the end of the program.
  • Coordination of speaking engagements. This includes mailings, tracking, providing all necessary information and materials to the speaker, follow up, etc.
  • Provide assistance to the Director of Community Development and Community Development Manager at all major events during the internship.
  • Filling orders and tracking reservations for various Community Development and Foundation Projects.
  • Assist with all databasing and sending of donations.
  • Assist in coordination of all auctions (event and game day).
  • Assist in coordination and execution of Hats For Heroes program and other Foundation initiatives (Puck Surprise, Festival of Trees, Jersey Raffle, etc)
  • Assist in coordination of team’s annual Hockey: It’s in Your Blood drive
  • Coordinate annual Blue Jackets Foundation Golf Classic
  • Participate in annual Fourth of July parades
  • Work to secure prizes for Hockey Fest carnival and auction
  • Coordinate promotion of the John H. McConnell Scholarship Fund

Key Projects:

  • Adopt-A-School Program - Coordinate the relationship between the CBJ front office staff and the team’s adopt a school – Arlington Park Elementary. Includes: coordination pen pals, speakers, player visits, etc.
  • CBJF Golf Classic - Work with the Director of the Foundation to execute the Blue Jackets Foundation Golf Classic. Includes: Event registration, coordination of attendee goodie bags, securing live auction items

Expectations:

  • It is expected that the intern will create a schedule that is consistent and reliable
  • It is expected that the intern will not miss more than 3 scheduled days of his/her internship and must have received permission in advance from his or her supervisor.
  • It is expected that the intern will be flexible and agreeable to assisting other departments within the organization.
  • Intern will keep a file on all key projects and summarize each with complete notes documenting each aspect of the project. This will serve as the starting point from which the next intern will work.

Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently to perform assigned tasks.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Intern will dress professionally.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and detail oriented.
  • Personable.
  • Basic knowledge of NHL and hockey.
  • Creative computer skills on IBM (tables, certificates, awards).
  • Interns must be proficient in Microsoft NT 4.0 and Microsoft Office 97, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Must know how to use Microsoft – mail merge

Required Hours: Minimum of 25 hours a week plus all community events/appearances

Additional Comments: The Community Development department was created to serve at the team’s liaison to the community through a variety of outreach programs in Franklin County and its contiguous counties. The department will strive to place players, staff, and the mascot in the community to keep the team “top of mind” and make the public feel like a part of the team through its grass roots efforts.
