National Hockey League Outreach
"The Biggest Assist Happens off the Ice” is the National Hockey League’s (NHL) and National Hockey League Players’ Association’s (NHLPA) social responsibility program that builds on the long-standing tradition of addressing important social issues in North America and around the world. Players, Member Clubs, Alumni and fans dedicate time, resources and energy to two relevant causes: the unyielding commitment to raising money and awareness for cancer care and research, and the fostering and development of our youth through the game of hockey. The three main components of these commitments are Hockey Fights Cancer, Hockey is for Everyone and the NHLPA’s Goals and Dreams Fund.
Hockey Fights Cancer
Hockey Fights Cancer is a joint initiative founded in December 1998 by the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association to raise money and awareness for hockey's most important fight. It is supported by NHL Member Clubs, NHL Alumni, the NHL Officials' Association, Professional Hockey Trainers and Equipment Managers, corporate marketing partners, broadcast partners and fans throughout North America. To date, more than $10 million has been raised to support national and local cancer research institutions, Children’s Hospitals, player charities and local cancer organizations.
To celebrate the start of each season, the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) host their annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Month in October. The league-wide initiative includes numerous activities that involve all 30 clubs, players, management and fans, as well as the creation of Hockey Fights Cancer-themed merchandise, all with the goal of raising awareness and funds for this important cause.

Hockey Is For Everyone
The Hockey is for Everyone initiative provides support and unique programming to non-profit youth hockey organizations across North America that are committed to offering children, of all backgrounds, opportunities to play hockey. The initiative is supported by NHL Member Clubs, NHL Alumni, players and fans. To date, Hockey is for Everyone has exposed close to 45,000 boys and girls to unique hockey experiences.
To celebrate this initiative, the National Hockey League hosts the annual Hockey is for Everyone Month in February. The league-wide initiative includes numerous activities to promote the diversity of the game that involve our clubs, players, alumni, fans, and grass-roots diversity programs, all with the goal of raising awareness and celebrating the growth of the game.

Goals and Dreams
NHLPA Goals & Dreams is the philanthropic arm of the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA). The fund, launched in 1999 as a way for the players to give back to the game they love, has donated full sets of hockey equipment to over 9,000 underprivileged children in 17 countries. In addition, over 75 ice re-surfacers and more than 110 sets of boards and glass were provided to community arenas in small towns in Europe and North America. Funds are allocated on a pro-rated basis according to the nationalities of the NHLPA’s membership.
The players’ program now focuses solely on donating equipment to programs that help youth from financially challenged families play the sport of hockey.
Since inception, the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund has donated more than $17-million to grassroots hockey programs around the world, making it the largest program of its kind!
