COLUMBUS DISPATCH NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION

Newspaper in Education

At The Dispatch, the Newspaper In Education program provides discounted newspapers to classrooms, supplies free teaching materials and presents workshops and in-service training to help teachers explore how to use the newspaper in class.

Our goals are to help students learn and develop reading and critical thinking skills now and to help them become informed, involved citizens in the future. We also work to provide teachers with an economical, effective and exciting teaching aid – the newspaper -- and supplemental, supportive teaching materials, whether they teach English, journalism, business, science, math, life skills or social studies.

"The Columbus Dispatch Newspaper In Education Program has been a fortunate recipient of financial grants from the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation for several years. The money helps us put more than 100,000 discounted newspapers in central Ohio classrooms each year. They're used by teachers for a range of lessons in many subject areas.

"But even more valuable, really, has been the player support the Foundation has provided us. Blue Jackets players from Europe have helped us teach geography lessons. And team Captain Rick Nash has always answered our call for help, whether it's encouraging children to read or to adopt healthy habits through the 61 Club Good Health Challenge. Meeting Rick has even been the "prize" for a couple of NIE contests. We look pretty cool thanks to the Foundation, and we couldn't have better, more involved partners in our newspaper education program. We are very grateful."
